So now you know the basic rules of  hold em, ie how to play the game. You know which card combinations are winners and which are losers. You are off to a good start, but there's so much  more to learn.  When to bluff and when to fold, how to tell if someone else is bluffing, and of course all the slang terms which are part and parcel of a good game of poker.  Don't worry though you can get started playing hold em straight away if you remember our 7 golden rules of texas hold em.

•  Watch your opponents:   
•  If you are playing live holdem (ie not online holdem) watch your opponents as the cards come down.  Don't watch the flop cards as many others will be doing. Look for tells from the other players as they react to the flop.  
• Be careful of low pairs:
• Play low pairs very cautiously and fold if you don't get a set (3) or more.
• Count your outs:
• Base your post flop play on the number of outs (opportunities to win) that  you have. If the flop leaves you with a few opportunities then make a bet.
• Use caution with low straights:
• Watch out if you are sitting at the low end of a straight. eg  if a 9, 10, Jack appears on the flop and you have a 7, 8, there's a good chance someone may have Q, K or make a straight on the turn / river.  Whether you decide to play will depend on your position, what the betting has been prior to your turn and how many players there are in the hand.
• Bluff:
• Don't worry if you get caught bluffing, people love to see others bluff then come a cropper.   It also means that they are more likely to call a later bet you make with a strong hand in the hope that you are bluffing again.
• Watch for the flush:
• Be careful of suited flops that can make a flush, all too often inexperienced players see the highest card matches theirs and bet high, blind to the fact that they are about to lose it all to their opponents flush.
• Play unpaired high cards: 
• If you have an ace with a high kicker or two unpaired high cards and the flop has been bad enough that there's a good chance no one will benefit from it (eg it is full of unconnected unsuited medium and low cards) then bet as you could make a high pair on the next card but beware of high reraises.
