Texas Holdem Basic Terms

When you are new to texas holdem, there's so much to learn, a whole set of poker rules, when to fold and when to bet, what to do after the flop,  which of the 10 winning card hands are the best and so on. To make matters worse there are so many new phrases to describe card combinations and ways of playing.  Here at rules of texas holdem we've tried to simplify things a bit by giving you the most used terms you are likely to come across.

All in:
A wager of all your chips. A player cannot be forced out of a pot because they have run out of chips, a separate pot will be created for the remaining players wagers. (ie if a player with more chips that you has gone all in you can go all in too even though you cannot bet as many chips)

Ante:
An amount asked of players at the start of a betting round regardless of whether they are taking part in that round or not. Not all games require antes. Antes can be used in the latter part of a tournament to speed up progress.

Betting round:
A single cycle of players checking / betting / calling / raising and folding.

Blind:
A bet made by a player or players without seeing their cards. Two players in holdem place bets or blinds before each hand is dealt.

Dealer button:
A token used to show who the dealer is. the dealer is last to receive cards and last to act in a round.  If there is no dedicated dealer (such as at a casino) this player will deal the cards when they have the dealer button

Call:
To match a previous bet .

Check:
To refrain from betting. If no previous players have bet and you don't wish to make a bet then you would check. You cannot check if a bet has already been made - you would either fold, call or raise.

Community cards:

The cards dealt face up in the middle of the table used by all players to make their best five card holdem hand.

Flop:
The first 3 of the community cards placed on the table at the same time.

Fold:
To discard your cards after being asked to call an unfavourable bet.

Hole Cards:
The two cards dealt to you at the start of the game also called the pocket cards.

Pot:
The amount of chips in the centre of the table (ie all the bets, blinds and ante's made during the course of the betting round)

Raise:
To increase the amount of a previous bet.

Showdown:
Showing your had to find out who is the winner
