KNOWING WHEN TO ENTER A POT
Knowing the odds in poker can help you win a lot of hands and keep you out of trouble in others. When you hear holdem players talking about pot odds they'll often talk about counting the outs. This simply means counting the number of cards that they can win with. Before we get to that though we need to know what kind of odds we have with each hand dealt to us.
Why?
Because knowing the holdem starting card odds will let you make an informed decision about whether to enter the game or fold, and whether you should see the bet or raise it. On the following pages we have listed a percentage odds of winning for every possible hand you'll come across and for table sizes up to nine players (ie you and 8 other poker players). As a general rule of thumb, I would generally never play hands with a less than 30% chance of winning unless they are suited and also have the chance of making a straight. If you look at the tables this can see you playing all kinds of hands (pocket pairs, King High, Queen high,Jack High, and the lower cards)depending on how many other players there are. As well as these holdem win percentages and number of opponents, you must take account of your position at the table before deciding to enter a pot.
