Texas Holdem post flop strategy rules This article will detail the strategy rules on how to play post flop. It will give you rules and insights on when to bet. Inform you on the best conditions for raising after the flop and when you should call. This post flop strategy will run through all the possible basic scenarios you may find yourself once the flop has fallen. Remember any flop strategy rules must be tempered by your knowledge of the other players style of play, their chip stacks as well as your own, your playing position and how many players see the flop. Your decision will be different if your playing in a no limit texas holdem or limit holdem game where the limits are low. Have a look at our online v's 'offline' holdem page. Ok, lets get started: Holdem flop strategy1: No pair and no over cards the flop has fallen, you have no pair and you don't have any over cards. Okay, this one's a no brainer - you need to fold unless you can check your way into the next round or the bets are very small and you need only one card for a good straight or flush. Holdem flop strategy 2: No pair but two over cards Again the flop leaves you without a pair but this time you have a slightly better starting hand with two over cards. However the same rules apply as in strategy one, only call cheap bets if you have a good chance of making a draw. Fold at all other times. Holdem flop strategy 3: One pair. This time you have been luckier and have made a pair with the flop. If you are sitting with the top pair and there is no immediate chance of a straight or flush then raise with the intention of eliminating those waiting for a draw. Get out of the game if your strong raise is called or re raised and there is a good chance they have either :
Holdem flop strategy 4: Two Pair Things are looking better, you have made two pair on the flop yet you may not have the nuts so its vital to raise to eliminate drawing and and to increase the pot. However if one of the pairs is made up solely from the community cards then do not raise. You can call small bets if you have a higher pair but watch out for your opponent having trips. Fold if your pocket pair is lower than the pair on the board. The only time you can raise is if you have a higher pocket pair and you are not playing with a full table (ie 8 or 9 other players makes it more likely that someone will have a match to the pair on the table.) Holdem flop strategy 5: You have trips It's starting to look pretty good now, you have more room to manoevre. If you have a pocket pair with a match on the flop, you're in a great position as it's unlikely anyone will suspect you have this combination. You should raise here and be fairly confident that your raise will be called and you may well go on to win a good pot. Watch out of course for the straight or flush possibilities. If however the trips are made up with one of your hole cards and a pair in the board you should still raise but be mindful of your kicker. Holdem flop strategy 6: Straight If you flop a straight raise with the intention of building the pot and depending on the quality of your straight to eliminate better straights / flushes etc in the next rounds. If your straight is the best achievable (nut straight) then you can slowplay if it doesn't look like a flush is on the cards. However if it doesn't seem obvious from the lie of the flop that a straight is on the cards then bet to build up the pot. Holdem flop strategy 7: Flush Whilst some players may not always recognise that a straight is possible from the flush, they will always spot three cards of the same suit lying next to each other. As such, for poor flushes, it's a balancing act between raising to eliminate better drawing flushes and scaring off the other players. Slow play the nut flush. Holdem flop strategy 8: All higher hands For all hands higher than a flush ( ie full house, quads, straight flush ) it is so unlikely that you'll be beaten in the later rounds that you should slow play (check and call) and give your opponents a chance to make a good hand and think they have the winning cards. |
