Where to sit at the poker table.Deciding
where to sit at the poker table is crucial to the success of your game.
Its not a good idea to wander into a casino or even an online
game and sit at the first available space. You may already
have watched the table for a while and decided that the betting is
within your comfort zone, and that there are a couple of players you'll
be able to exploit but if you don't follow this logic through
to your decision on where to sit at the poker table, you could set
yourself up to lose a lot of chips.
You may think it doesn't really matter, each player gets a turn to be 'dealer', small blind, etc but this isn't really the issue. You need to look at the strengths and weaknesses of each player and pick who should sit on your left and who should sit on your right. Here's a quick guide on where to sit at the poker table: As a general rule you want the most difficult, aggressive or maniac players on your right. Why? Players on your right will make their bet before you. This gives you a better chance of assessing a situation than if you have an aggressive player play after you. You don't want to to make a raise only to have a maniac player go all in and force you to fold. Aggressive players who bet before you will always put you in a position of having to make hard decisions but at least they will be better informed decisions. When you have a player who is more aggressive than you in any position, you'll have to tighten up a bit but at least if he's on your right, you won't be folding your initial bet because he's raised it a crazy amount. With tight, timid or very conservative players you're not really as worried where you sit as you should be able to intimidate them from any position. If you are able to choose, sit with them on your immediate left. This will give you the opportunity to steal their blinds. Now both these poker seating rules apply to both online and casino games and in online games it can be easier to choose where you sit at the table and even move about during the game. The next tip will really only work in a live situation as it deals with the novice player. This player is harder to spot online as you can't tell how nervous or uncertain an avatar is! In a live game it'll usually be pretty easy to spot a rookie. You want a new player making his bets before you do because chances are he's going to make a lot of mistakes and you want to see when he enters the pot so you can also. You want to be able to exploit his weaknesses. So in an ideal poker game you want to sit with the aggressive or new player immediately to your right and a conservative player to your left. |
