Betting and Strategy on the RiverWhat are the rules for betting on the river in texas holdem? You would think that Once the river card turns over in texas holdem, you're either sitting pretty or out of options. Well this is often
true but, as you'll probably know by now, with texas
holdem its not that simple! Your holdem betting
strategy at this point should be determined by;
Scenario One You are in a head to head game, sitting with ace high only - no match to the board. Your opponent is an aggressive player who knows the nature of the heads up game can often be all about posturing. This is one of the rare occasions after the river when you can feel ok about betting without a pair. The chances of him hitting either of his cards in the game is still lower that the chance of him missing. Bet or Call depending on the size of his bet. Here you are making your decision based on the fact you know the player likes to bluff, if he goes all in with a large chip stack - then you would fold. Scenario Two. 9 players, five of which see the flop, and two including yourself at the river. Regardless of what's on the board, how each of the players have played before or how the betting went, this is not the time to bluff without at least having top pair. Now is the time to maximise your winnings if you are sitting with the nuts or quit and accept your losses. It's not the time to try one last bluff. You would be surprised at the number of people who try an out and out bluff here. This is usually a big mistake. Chances are if someone has called your betting up to this point or has made some bets of their own, then they've at least got a half way decent hand. If you're sitting with little more than ace high, then now might be the time to call it quits for this hand. Fold. Scenario Three There are three players post river, betting has been fairly tight up to this point and the last card gives you a straight but there is a flush on the board. This is a tricky situation and it all depends on when the possible flush arrived on the board, who was pushing the betting and your knowledge of the players. If the flush came up with the flop, then you really shouldn't have made it all the way to the river. Fold. If the possible flush only presented itself with the last card, you're still not out of the woods as the cheap betting would have allowed others to wait for the flush. Proceed with caution and only call a cheap bet. Do not re raise. This is really one of those times where your knowledge of probabilities will only get you so far, there are no hard and fast rules for this one. You have to make a judgement call based on how the other players have been playing, both in this hand and previously. It's not easy but it's something that gets easier with time and practice. There are many free poker odds calculators out there that will help with your betting. |
