How to Play Omaha High LowOmaha strategy is a bit more complicated than texas hold em strategy, but its well worth persevering to learn the rules of the game. This article however assumes knowledge of holdem rules and terminology. If you are unfamiliar with either of these then please visit the relevant page. In omaha high low, the highest hand and the lowest hand get half the pot each, and it is possible to hold both the highest and lowest hand at the same time. But more on that later, lets get started on learning the rules of omaha hi low. Omaha high low Dealing Each player in omaha hi low is dealt four hole cards that belong only to them. Five community cards are dealt to the table in the same manner as texas holdem ( ie flop, turn river.) A dealer button follows the dealer after every game so each person deals once in one circuit of the table. Omaha high low Betting Prior to the start of the round, the small blind and big blind are posted and the dealer deals the four omaha hole cards to each player. Each player bets according to the game type (limit, pot limit, no limit etc) and betting stops when all players have bet, raised, checked and folded and each player has contributed the same number of chips to the pot. The five community cards are dealt with betting after the flop, turn and river cards. Omaha high low Goal The goal in omaha hi low is to simultaneously get the best high and low hand. This is called scooping the pot. If one player gets the best high hand and another the best low hand, then the pot is split 50/50. It is also possible to get a quarter of the pot if someone else wins the high pot and you tie for the low pot. The omaha high winner gets 50% and you and your tying player get 25%. To create the winning hand, you must use two cards from your hand and three from the board (unlike holdem where any five cards create the winner) . However you can use a different two cards for your high and low hands. The omaha high hand The omaha high hand is decided jsut the same as in omaha or holdem, by the same hand ranking rules. (e flushes, pairs, straights etc have the same rank as usual) but it must be made of two of your cards and any three of the community or board cards. The omaha low hand The omaha low hand is made up in the same way, with any two of your hole cards and any three board cards. Flushes and straights do not have any value and pairs are not allowed. The aim of the omaha low hand is to get the five lowest value cards without any of them being the same. Also they must be of value 8 or lower. For example, you are dealt ![]() and the five board cards are: ![]() From this, the omaha low hand would be: 7h, 5d, 3c, 2c, As (taking the 7h and 5d from the hole cards and the rest from the board) The low hand could not be; 5h, 5d, 3c, 2c, As as pairs are not allowed. The omaha high hand would be; Kc, Qc, 8c, 3c, 2c and would be a flush. In omaha hi low, aces can be both high and low and it is possible for the same 5 card hand to be the winner for both high and low hands. For example A, 2, 3, 4, 5 would be the best low hand you could get and could also be a possible winning straight or straight flush for the high hand. As you can see, with four omaha hole cards dealt and two winning hands to find, calculating pot odds for omaha high low is more complicated than for holdem. There's also more chance of getting a massive hand with hi low than with holdem. Players of this type of omaha will argue that this is what makes it a game of greater skill. There are different ways to play omaha high low just as there are different ways to play holdem. The next step in mastering the game is to learn different game types in omaha hi low Or if you want to go directly to the strategy articles before you play omaha online, then visit, strategies for playing omaha high low |
